What is an Air Source Heat Pump?

What is an air source heat pump? An air source heat pump (ASHP) is a highly efficient, low-carbon heating system that absorbs ambient heat from the outside air to provide central heating and domestic hot water for your home or office.

Even at freezing winter temperatures down to -25 °C, Stiebel Eltron heat pumps can extract heat and produce water at 75 °C. For every 1kW of electricity you put in, you get a minimum of 3kW of heat out—giving you at least 300% efficiency compared to traditional fossil fuel boilers.

How Does an Air Source Heat Pump Work?

The science behind the heat pump operates in four simple steps:

  1. Evaporation: The pump draws heat from the outside air and transfers it to a heat exchanger containing a liquid refrigerant. This refrigerant absorbs the heat and evaporates into a gas.

  2. Compression: An electrically powered compressor squeezes the gas, increasing its pressure and significantly raising its temperature.

  3. Condensation: The hot gas transfers its heat to your home's water circuit (warming your radiators or underfloor heating to around 55°C). As it transfers the heat, the gas cools back into a liquid.

  4. Expansion: The cooled liquid moves through an expansion valve, lowering its pressure so it is ready to absorb more heat and repeat the cycle.

The Benefits: How Much Can You Save?

Choosing an air source heat pump is a wise investment in your property's future.

  1. Cut Carbon Emissions: Slash your carbon footprint by up to 70%

  2. Increase Property Value: According to Savills estate agents, homes with heat pumps command up to a 59% premium over regional averages.

  3. Reduce Energy Bills: Significant savings compared to standard fossil fuel boilers, especially when combined with a Solar PV system.

  4. Access: Modern controls with remote monitoring and access on suitable systems

  5. Cooling option: Can offer cooling in summer

Is an air source heat pump right for my property?

Air source heat pumps are suitable for both retrofit properties and new builds, provided the system is properly designed for the home. Insulation levels, heat emitters, hot water requirements, and the property's overall performance must all be assessed before creating a final specification. Therefore, a professional assessment is crucial, beginning with a room-by-room heat loss calculation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How much does an air source heat pump cost to install? The total cost depends on the size of your property, your insulation levels, and your heat loss. However, with the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) grant and 0% VAT, the upfront cost is significantly reduced, often making it highly competitive with a standard boiler replacement. Contact us for a free, customised quote!

Do air source heat pumps work in the UK winter? Absolutely. The premium Stiebel Eltron heat pumps we install are explicitly designed to extract heat from the air even when temperatures drop well below freezing. You will stay warm and comfortable all winter long.

Will I need new radiators for a heat pump? Not always. Heat pumps run at a lower, more consistent temperature than gas boilers. Total NRG will perform a full room-by-room heat-loss calculation to determine whether your current radiators are large enough. Sometimes, upgrading a few radiators or installing underfloor heating ensures your system runs at maximum efficiency.

Is it Noisey: The brand Stiebel Eltron is the quietest heat pump on the market due to the advanced inverter technology and sound-damping insulation.

Are you MCS & BUS Certified? Yes! Total NRG is fully MCS Certified. This is a strict legal requirement to claim the £7,500 BUS grant, and it gives you peace of mind that our installations meet the highest UK industry standards.
