Expert Ground Source Heat Pump Installers in Staffordshire & the UK
Unlock the ultimate in renewable energy efficiency. By drawing constant, stable heat directly from the earth, a Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) provides incredibly reliable, low-cost heating and hot water year-round.
Based in Staffordshire, Total NRG has been designing and installing premium ground source heating systems for homes, farms, and commercial estates across the UK since 2008.
Claim Your £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) Grant
Because Ground Source Heat Pumps are recognised as one of the most efficient ways to decarbonise your home, the UK government will currently give you a £7,500 upfront grant towards the cost of your installation.
As fully MCS-certified installers, Total NRG will handle your entire BUS grant application from start to finish, applying the discount directly to your final invoice. With the current 0% VAT on heat pump installations, a premium GSHP is more accessible than ever.
According to estate agents, Savills Homes with heat pumps command a 59% premium over regional averages.
Bus funding increase announcement to £9,000 for properties replacing oil or LPG
(Implementation date to be confirmed)
Why Are Ground Source Heat Pumps So Efficient?
While traditional fossil-fuel boilers require one unit of gas to generate roughly one unit of heat, ground-source systems operate in a different league entirely.
Because the ground below the frost line maintains a steady temperature of around 10°C year-round, your heat pump doesn't have to work hard to extract energy. For every 1 unit of electricity a GSHP consumes, it can produce between 4 and 7 units of heat energy for your home. This equates to an incredible 400%-700% efficiency, drastically reducing your carbon footprint and energy bills.
Trenches vs. Boreholes: How Does it Work?
A ground-source heat pump is installed by burying a series of pipes (a closed-loop array) in the ground. A safe mixture of water and antifreeze circulates through these pipes, absorbing the earth's natural thermal energy and carrying it back to the indoor heat pump unit.
Depending on the size of your land, Total NRG offers two main installation methods:
-
Shallow Trenches (Horizontal Array): This is the most common and cost-effective method if you have plenty of land (like a large garden, paddock, or field). We use trenching machinery to lay the pipe loops horizontally, about a meter below the surface.
-
Boreholes (Vertical Array): If you don't have a lot of surface space, we can drill deep vertical boreholes straight down into the earth. While the drilling process is more intensive, it requires very little square footage and provides highly consistent heat yields. (Have a lake or large pond on your property? We can even design water-source arrays to extract heat directly from the water!)
Why Choose Total NRG for Your Ground Source Project?
Ground Source installations require serious expertise. We manage the entire process, from the initial heat-loss survey through the groundworks to final commissioning.
-
Premium Technology: We are an approved partner of Stiebel Eltron, a German manufacturer in business since 1924. We install their incredibly robust ground-source units, ranging from 4kW to 89kW (which can be cascaded for massive commercial projects).
-
Smart Remote Control: Control your heating from your smartphone. Our systems feature remote access, enabling our engineers to monitor performance and adjust settings remotely to prevent any downtime.
-
Solar Integration: We can connect your solar PV directly to your heat pump, so you can power your ground-source system with your own free solar energy!
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How much land do I need for a ground source heat pump? If you are opting for horizontal trenches, you generally need an area of land about two to three times the total floor area of your property. If space is tight, vertical boreholes can be drilled in a much smaller footprint.
Do ground source heat pumps work with radiators? Yes. However, because heat pumps operate at lower, more continuous flow temperatures than gas boilers, they are best paired with Underfloor Heating (UFH) or slightly oversized radiators to maximise their 400%+ efficiency. Total NRG will perform a full room-by-room calculation to advise you.
Can a ground source heat pump cool my house in the summer? Yes! Many premium ground source heat pumps can be run in "reverse" during the warmer months, utilising the cooler ground temperatures to provide highly efficient cooling for your home.

Government Incentives
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) supports the decarbonization of heat in buildings. It provides grants to support the installation of heat pumps in homes and non-domestic buildings in England and Wales. Total NRG can provide information and assistance in understanding and accessing these incentives, maximizing your financial benefits. £7500 grant towards the installation of a heat pump(s) and still at 0% VAT on all installations.
By choosing Total NRG as your partner for GSHP installation, you can enjoy these benefits while relying on our expertise and commitment to delivering high-quality, sustainable energy solutions.
Please note that the benefits may vary based on location, property size, energy usage, and other factors. It’s recommended that you consult with Total NRG to determine whether a heat pump is suitable for your specific needs.
